A few names that are important in American art are Emanuel Leutze and Winslow Homer. I went for my yearly trip to the MET I was quite disappointed that for the second year in a row the American Wing was under Construction. You can still view a number of American paintings in one of those storage space/display things museums think are cool but are not. A large number of the American paintings are boring and very european but a few of them are absolute keepers. Beacons of Examples of American art that should be displayed much more proudly than a storage display thing. I think that those grand halls as soon as you walk up the stairs should be where the American collection should be housed not the european paintings. The Leutze painting was nopt on display and I was told it is being restored. When I got there the roof was closed unannounced on the web site or anything like that because they had a private party up their and had to close early.Which made me happy for buying two tickets for a nickle. Gilbert Stuart also should be a household name but is often just thought of as that guy who did the dollar bill portrait of GW.
